Mechanical Actuators (Screw Jacks)
Duff Norton produces the most widely used and popular screw jacks worldwide which have been proven in the most demanding linear motion applications. As a leader in the manufacture of mechanical screw jacks Duff Norton guarantees quality, reliability, performance and value for today’s demanding industrial applications. Duff-Norton’s high quality screw jacks are suitable for a wide variety of uses. They can be employed to lift, pull, move or align any kind of load with perfect synchronization and repeatability. Operating singularly or in groups connected with shafts, couplings and/or bevel gearboxes.
Screw Jacks - Metric (5 - 500 kN)
Duff-Norton offers a comprehensive line of both standard and custom engineered metric machine screw jacks for applications up to 200kN. Duff-Norton metric machine screw jacks are produced in many standard models to ISO Standards with a wide range of capacities. There is a standard model for almost any requirement.

All actuators require an external power source. Whether this power source be an electric motor or hand wheel Duff-Norton has the required component. Customers who choose to power their actuators with an electric motor may do so by connecting the motor to the actuator via a C-face adapter, right angle gear reducer, or by remotely connecting the motor and actuator worm shaft with a coupling and connecting shaft.
For harsh environments, Duff-Norton offers a complete line of stainless steel machine screw jacks in standard and special configurations for loads up to 100 tons. Duff-Norton Stainless Steel screw jacks incorporate all of the same features as Duff-Norton’s standard machine screw actuators, but can be used in severe environments where other materials are inadequate. All exposed surfaces are made of 316 stainless steel including the lifting screw, housing, shell cap, worm and dust guard. Options include: anti-backlash and keyed lifting screws for translating screw models.
Anti-backlash actuators reduce linear backlash resulting in smooth, precise operation and minimal wear. Backlash occurs when the motor driving an actuator reverses its load direction or alternatively a load imposed on the lifting screw changes direction -i.e. – load changing from compression to tension. Since there is a gap between the lifting screw and the worm gear threads detrimental screw movement may
occur.

Anode Screw Jacks provide the accepted method for the lowering, precise positioning of the anodes and anode beams in the vast majority of aluminium smelters. Anode beam positioning in aluminium smelters employ a special screw jack called an Anode Jack has evolved from a standard unit modified to cope
with the harsh operating environment. The Anode Screw Jack or sometimes known as Pot Jacks are mechanically linked through a combination of drivetrain components with their position monitored electronically thus providing potline efficiency to be attained.
The Duff-Norton Ball Screw Actuator range gives you a single- package, positive-action linear actuator which can be driven by an electric, air or hydraulic motor. A ball-bearing type heat treated screw and mating nut with rolling contact reduces friction to a bare minimum in converting torque to thrust.
Overall operating efficiency is as high as 70% in some models, depending on the ratio of the worm gear set. Because our ball screw actuator unit has been carefully engineered and pretested, you no longer have to purchase components from different suppliers and design your own system to achieve high levels of efficiency. So you save design, set- up and testing time.
Duff Norton Ball Screw Actuators are available in standard models and Continuous Duty Cycle type featuring oil bath lubrication for continuous operation applications.
Ball Screw Actuators
Duff-Norton Ball Screw actuators provide high efficiency and high speed in one linear positioning package. The positive action of the low friction ball screw and nut design provides longer life at load and requires less power to achieve a specified thrust. Ball screw actuators can be used individually, in tandem or as part of a larger mechanical system.
Anti-Rotation Models available – contact our customer service personnel for more information
Move loads and apply force more efficiently than other mechanical actuators
Require less power by providing positive mechanical action
Permit faster operation and longer life under load
Upright or inverted translating screw, rotating screw available and double clevis.
Maximum Load Capacities range from 3,500 to 27,000 pounds. Rated Load Capacities (load at which actuator life is 1,000 hours) range from 2,000 to 13,000 pounds.
Duff Norton Linear Actuator products are manufactured for load capacities ranging from 120N to 25 Ton. Designs incorporating gear or belt drives, acme screw and ball screw systems, with features such as inbuilt clutches, brakes, positioning feedback and limit switches with various AC and DC voltages.
Duff-Norton has been manufacturing acme screws and ball screws and nuts for actuator products for decades. Those years of experience are now being applied to bring you a large range of screws and nuts to meet your linear motion applications and requirements.
Acme Screw Systems offer:
Centralizing Class Acme Screws are used extensively for feed screws. The limited clearance enables a bearing at the major diameter to maintain alignment of the thread axis preventing wedging on the flanks and part sagging.
Excellent Lead Accuracy
Smooth Finish
Ball Screw Systems offer:
Excellent Load Ratings
90% Efficient for low power requirements
Long and predictable life ratings
Excellent Lead Accuracy
Ball Screws & Nuts
